A Rising Star Of Our Own

Aussie Star in the making Chelsea Glaw

Now living in Los Angeles, Gold Coast grown girl, Chelsea Glaw is making her mark in the world of film.

Having a strong passion for dramatic arts, in particular, acting for screen since a young girl, Chelsea continuously worked on improving herself as an actress.  In Year 11 (2012), she was successful at claiming a scholarship at the prestigious New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. At the opportunity, 4 weeks after her high school graduation, a young girl left her family and friends in pursuit of a big dream in the Big Apple.

Filming her American reel

Chelsea lived in New York, New York for two years whilst undertaking her Associates Degree in Acting which she completed last year. While studying she surrounded herself with means to better herself as a performer including learning outside of a school environment, she networked, went to live shows, filmed short films, attended multiple auditions and was an assistant at a acting and modelling agency in the city in 2015.

She also attended her first red carpet event in New York City last September where her close friend Alexander Flores stars in the movie Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials as Winston.

Red Carpet Lovin’

Chelsea commented, “It was a very overwhelming experience being on the red carpet and having cameras flash in your face every 2 seconds in every single direction. I had never been on a red carpet before so I was just posing for photos and then I got out of there. But I was so happy to be there supporting Alex and he handled it like a pro, as always. Dazzling the fans and doing interview after interview. It was great. Oh and I should probably say the movie was great too!”

She was also lucky enough to attend The Scorch Trials after party where she spoke with the awesome cast, including leading lads Dylan O’Brien and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Although Chels has recently moved to Los Angeles where her dreams continue to be more of a reality, New York will always hold a special place in her heart. Chelsea said that it had shaped the person she is today; she learned so much from the city and made lifelong connections and the best friends she will ever have. Does she miss home? She misses her family big time, vegemite toast, and although she’s met a great bunch of Aussie performers in LA; she still misses being surrounded by the Aussie accent.

In her element: in front of the camera

Talk about timing – she’s hit the sweet spot at the moment for film as La La Land enters pilot season (peak time for casting, producing or preparation of TV pilot episodes). She’s been keeping busy with her application for an artist visa, auditions left, right and center, networking, and acting for short films. Chelsea’s upcoming projects includes a short film about her story  written by filmmaker and photographer Steven Leone who has just wrapped up shooting a range of models in Europe.  The short film will star her and begins filming very soon. This 19 year old isn’t slowing down anytime soon.  Watch this space and remember her name, this girl is going places!

Connor Franta’s First Aussie Interview (2013)

The incredible Connor (2015)

Hello! So serious throwback to one of my favourite times ever: my interview with YouTube sensation Connor Franta in 2013, which was also his first Australian interview! Sweetest human being, very humble and funny and just a likeable person.  Though much of his life was already on the web, I got down to business and asked some questions we’d been dying to know the answers to. I feel so fortunate to have been able to speak to him as well as Tyler Oakley and will never forget that they helped a small girl in a big town move one step closer to her dream.

From an already large 300 000 when this interview went down to a whopping 5+ million subscribers and heaps more on his social networks, this frantastic guy has truly taken the online world by storm.  Since watching his videos in 2011, I knew he’d do great things and I as well as all his other fans are so proud of everything he has achieved and the person he truly is.  So without further ado…

Song to describe your life:  Walking on sunshine

Favourite Disney movie and why?  Mulan, my whole family loves that one, gets a good laugh out of us.

Are you still a Directioner? Always, forever and always, One Direction for life!

Fave 1D boy: Liam because apparently we’re twins

World without YouTube or coffee?  A world without coffee cause I love YouTube more.  But I do love both, so it’s really hard

Fave Starbucks drink? Plain lattes, caramels macchiato’s

How was Australia when you came in 2011?  I want to go back, it was a lot of fun.

How many years of making vlogs?  2 ½ years.  Not too long, not too short.  It didn’t take off ‘till about a year ago though. Edit: It’ll be 6 years this August!

How do you juggle YouTube and college life?  It’s not too hard, it’s difficult because other people don’t have to do that.  It’s kind of like a full-time job even though I don’t consider it a job.  It requires a lot of hours, it’s kinda difficult but it’s a lot of fun so it’s easy to manage.

What are you studying and when do you finish?  Global business leadership major: business, marketing type stuff and art minor in video.  I’m a sophomore so 2 more years until I get my degree.

3 fave YouTubers? DailyGrace, Shane Dawson, NigaHiga

Collab with?  I’m in California for the summer, so really anyone who wants to collab, I’m excited

Our 2nd Life: Doing really well, we’re the biggest collab channel that’s ever been on YouTube and it’s only growing and it’s only been going since August.  All of them are my best friends. Edit: Connor departed from the group in July, 2014.

Playlist Live:  Great!  It was really exciting, even better than what I thought it would be.  Lots of fans, lots of meeting people, lots of everything!  It was great.  So much fun.

Tyler Oakley said….: I didn’t.  I still feel like I’m a nobody in the YouTube world and their like ‘no, no no’ but when someone like Tyler Oakley with like 800 000 subscribers says to me, “yeah, I watch your videos”  I’m like ‘no you don’t, shut up! No you don’t, you don’t know who I am’ (laughs).  He’s (Tyler) really nice, some YouTubers when you meet them, they’re not that down to earth, kind of stuck-up, but Tyler’s not. He’s 100% nice to everyone.

Our 2nd life did a 2 hour meet and greet and I was like “Noooooo!”

Besides moving to LA, other future goals?  My main goal, see where this summer takes me, I wanna prove to myself that I can live out there and live that life and pursue entertainment.  After the summer I’ll have more goals. Edit: Oh boy did he achieve that and much more!

M:  Are you ready for a challenge?

C:  Oh gosh!

M:  Yeah? Well okay!  Here are 7 Australian slang words that everyone says:

Australian Slang test:

C: Oh shoot!  Can you use it in a sentence or do I have to guess?

M: It’s a time of day

C: Afternoon?

M: one point!  That’s right

C: I would have never guessed, I would’ve guessed like a vegetable or something like that (laughs)

C: That’s like a Barbeque right?

M: Yay!  2 points?

C:  That’s like the thing from ‘Dumb and Dumber’ (in a horrible Australian accent says) ‘throw a shrimp on the barbie’

M: Correct although Australians don’t really say shrimp, we say prawns

C: I got it! (Laughs) Yeah, inaccurate

C:  It sounds like skiing, but it’s definitely not that!

M: You take it with you when you go on picnics or barbies.

C: umm a basket!

M: Uhhh, kind of, that’s worth half a point.  I think in America you call it a Coleman.  It’s a cold container for food and drinks and stuff like that

C: A cooler thing?

M: Yeah! That’s what an Esky is.

C: That’s half a point!

C:  It can mean like hey, good morning, good afternoon or anything like that. Like G’Day!

M: Yes, that’s right!

C:  I know Australian stuff, I went there, I know stuff!

C: Oh! It’s McDonalds

M: Yeah! That’s all it is.

C:  When I was staying with my host family, they said that a couple times.

M:  You have 4 and ½ points at the moment, 2 more to go.

C:  Yes!

C: Sandals

M:  Oh! You got that right!

C:  My mom’s called them that before and I’m like ‘that’s weird’.  She lived in Australia for a little bit.

C: Oh gosh.

M: T-O-G-S

C:  Is it an article of clothing too?  I was going to say, is it boots?

M: No, no that’s so far from what it is (laughs)

C:  Pants?  I don’t know.

M:  That’s also not what it is.

C:  What is it?

M:  You’re going to go to the beach and you’re going to wear them… wear it.

C:  Swim trunks?

M: Yeahh!! Or swimmers.  But that should only be 1/3 since you guessed 3 times.

C: Yeah! I knew it was an article of clothing but I had no idea what it was. Woooo!!  I’ll count that as a B or a C!

M:  I think that one’s about a C+?

C:  Adequate job, yeah?

M:  So, you have 5 and ¾ out of 7 points! Yay Connor!!!

C:  Wooooo!

Solid effort!  Here’s Connor’s message to all of you; his Australian fans:  I love you guys!  Thank you for all your support from all the way from the other side of the world, I hope that I can come and meet as many of you as possible someday! Edit: He’s recently toured Oz and has been a few times with Troye Sivan and Tyler Oakley.

Disruption by Jessica Shirvington Review

Australian author, Jessica Shirvington’s science fiction thriller novel, Disruption was just released earlier this year! What if a microchip could identify your perfect match? What if it could be used against you and the ones you love? It is the first book of a duology about 18-year old Maggie Stevens, a girl who just blended in and wasn’t noticed, until she ‘rated’ extremely well with it-boy and heir to the M-Corp empire, Quentin Mercer. Things seem to be falling into place exactly as Maggie hoped, until she is torn between making choices, which will affect the people she loves and cares about most, a heartbreaking realisation of who is really good or evil.

I try to be an avid and open-minded reader so I didn’t think this kind of book would be my thing but Disruption just totally blew me away. I loved every part of the novel; the plot, the kick-butt characters, the setting, and just the way it was written. It’s a very addictive read and you forget that it’s actually set in our world with the only difference being the ‘mandatory M-bands’. This would be Jessica’s best book yet and it’s definitely my favourite novel I have ever read so far. I’d recommend this book for girls 14+ years, but if you boys want to try something different, why not?  I cannot wait to read the second and final book of this duology! Packed with action, danger, adventure, and romance, bonds made and trust broken, Jessica Shirvington’s Disruption will most definitely disrupt your nights with awesomeness!

Today is a wonderful day!

I know I’m Australian but no matter where you live and where you come from, there are always things to be thankful for! And what an occasion, that started by celebrating a good harvest to now a celebration of everything we’re grateful for. #blessed

I’m thankful for everyday I’ve lived, for family, for friends and for you – my readers, this incredible interaction we’re able to have thanks to the internet all of which fill me with great happiness, so I’m grateful for technology and the internet as well.  I’m also very grateful for all the blessings and opportunities the universe and God has provided me with.  Safety and food. I am also so thankful for.  Seriously, with increasing poverty in our world, being able to have home cooked meals every night, the occasional take-out, food in the pantry and in the fridge.  I mentioned opportunities, being blessed with an incredible state of life, I’m thankful for being able to help those less fortunate than I am.

The list could go on and on!  I hope your Thanksgiving was filled with your loved ones and an amazing feast.  Love and light to all of you who have celebrated or are still celebrating in the US! x

What are you thankful for?

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Rated: M

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Philip Seymour Hoffman are back for the third instalment of The Hunger Games with Julianne Moore as President Coin of District 13.

Katniss Everdeen is in District 13, after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.

After being removed from the games by anti-government forces at the end of Catching Fire, Katniss Everdeen finds herself reluctantly agreeing to be the poster girl for the rebellion – styled and manipulated by the underground in the same way that the Capitol once dolled her up for TV dismemberment. Dressed in all black and ready for combat with some pretty awesome arrows or as Effie puts it, “the best dressed rebel in history,” Katniss is directed to do sets of propaganda videos – or “propos” – to inspire the people of Panem to join the fight against the Capitol.

Katniss has to witness Peeta supposedly on President Snow’s side, (Donald Sutherland) as he begs for the districts to quit fighting. Through this, she’s endlessly supported by Gale, who even through all the heartache and pain still wants to be more than friends.

“If we burn, you burn with us.”

I liked this one, not as much as Catching Fire but it was still really good and I enjoyed it. I do understand how some people found Mockingjay: Part 1 sort of a drab – the lack of extravagant and colourful costumes and settings like at the Capitol and just an absence of visual variety compared to what we’ve seen in The Hunger Games and Catching Fire like during the actual games. In most of this movie, Katniss kind of just mopes around and looks aghast, she is still recovering from PTSD, so she’s forgiven. Don’t get me wrong, Jennifer Lawrence’s acting is superb and her emotions pour out so we feel what Katniss feels, she gave me chills during a visit in District 8! Philip Seymour Hoffman who plays Plutarch Heavensbee was fantastic, still a perfect fit for his character! Although the cast playing the lead roles are practically perfect, I’m also a big fan of the supporting characters, in particular Cressida (Natalie Dormer).

On a side note – Katniss as a character is very important and I think the media misunderstands that we aren’t in it for the boys, we’re in it for Katniss. Thousands of young girls and boys were introduced to a protagonist who’s an introverted, angry girl born into poverty and watched her become the saviour of the world and the media doesn’t seem to understand that she as a character, is important to us, especially us females. Not who she dates, but her and her values.

What did you think of the latest Hunger Games franchise? Love it or loathe it?

Tyler Oakley’s First Ever Australian Interview – Exclusive (2013)

The fabulous Tyler Oakley this year!
The fabulous Tyler Oakley this year!

Last year, I was sooooo blessed to be able to do this incredible guy’s first Australian interview! He is loved by many, very funny and is such a dear!  So here’s an updated intro and the interview xo

Popular American YouTuber, Tyler Oakley is taking over the world one video at a time. If you don’t already know who he is, Oakley is a 25-year old Los Angeles resident who makes YouTube videos every week. Tyler first started making YouTube videos to keep in touch with his high school friends when he went off to university, making 2014 his seventh year of making YouTube vlogs. He is also known for his many collaborations with other popular YouTubers and his love for Glee’s Darren Criss. Since then, Tyler’s popularity has been growing and growing with now over 3 million followers on Twitter and over 5 million subscribers on his YouTube channel Tyler Oakley.

I, Monique Pueblos, a high school student from the Gold Coast, was privileged to have an exclusive interview with Tyler thanks to the power of technology, a couple of lucky fans also got the opportunity to get their questions answered. This was definitely one of the highlights of my writing career so far with surely many opportunities to come in the future. He was such a candid, charming person and was just fun to interview! I find him incredibly down to earth.  Like I said, this interview took place early last year, when Ty only had over 800 000 subscribers!  I’m so proud of how far he’s come so far since then. The interview covers things from The Trevor Project, to food to One Direction and of course, the wonderful people that are YouTubers! Bringing hilarity through his videos to millions of viewers around the globe, presenting the incredible Tyler Oakley:

Last year. So sassy but so sweet!
Last year. So sassy but super sweet!

Me: What do you call the people in your fandom?

Tyler: Fabulous people. Perhaps Team Fangirl? I don’t know. All I know is that I adore them.

M: Describe yourself in 3 words.

T: Fine, fresh, fierce.

M: If someone asked you who Tyler Oakley is, what would you say?

T: I’d say he’s a professional fangirl. Also, PS, this totally happened once. I was at a brunch and a girl leaned over and asked me, “Who is this Tyler Oakley everyone is talking about?” – I was like, “I don’t know, but what is everyone saying?”

M: If you had a magic genie lamp, what would your three wishes be?

T: To live in a food court, a never-ending supply of short-sleeved button-down shirts, and full equality and safety for everyone, regardless of how they identify.

M: If you were a food, what would you be?

T: Spicy mayo! I LOVE SPICY MAYO!

M: Now, I know you’re a massive Directioner!  So am I!!! Who do you ship out of the boys the most and if one of the boys said “I love you Tyler Oakley!”  What would your reaction be?

T: I ship Ziall – Zayn & Niall, mainly because I’m obsessed with Zayn and I live vicariously through my fellow blonde-bombshell Niall. If Zayn said he loved me, I’d sh*t and puke everywhere.

M: You’re so open and real in your videos!  A lot of people love and admire that…. But haters gonna hate right, how do you deal with the criticism?

T: I thank them for the free promo.

M: What do you enjoy most about making YouTube videos?

T: Having a creative outlet that lets me make real connections with people all over the world.

M: Who’s your favourite YouTuber of all time and what’s your favourite collaboration?

T: I have so many favorite YouTubers! I can’t pick just one. Miles Jai, Mamrie Hart, GloZell and SO MANY MORE! My favorite collaboration would have to be the one I did with Jack and Finn Harries – “Twin Twinks Learn Gay Slang” – it was huge for me!

M: Who do you wish to collab with in the future?

T: There are so many people with which I want to make videos! I have so many YouTubers that are on my list, but I need to do something for my channel with GloZell, Shane Dawson, Zoella Sugg, Joey Graceffa and more. And besides YouTubers… Lindsay Lohan and Cher! (Which are totally doable.)

M: Haha!

Note – If you follow Ty, you’d know he’s successfully collaborated with most of the peeps he mentioned 🙂

Jack and Finn are cheeky boys on screen, what are they really like?

T: The sweetest, smartest, savviest guys ever. Just pure delights. And super flirty.

M: How was Playlist Live?

T: It was a sh*t-show, in the best way possible. I got to have a four-hour meet and greet, go on stage with a ton of my favorite YouTube guys in front of hundreds of screaming fans, and have fun/get to know so many of my favorite YouTubers. It’s such a love-fest.

M: I know the Trevor Project is a suicide prevention foundation for gays, lesbians, bi’s and transgender, but what’s your role and why is it so important to you?

T: The Trevor Project is important to me because it’s the leading national (USA) organization for crisis and suicide prevention. I interned there a few summers ago and have been involved in several campaigns and I now co-host the red carpet live-stream for Trevor Live, their annual December benefit. The fact that they can take calls from all over the country (USA) 24/7 and make them completely free and confidential gives me hope that LGBTQ kids can make it through their rough patches to discover that it really does get better and not just hear about how it does from adults.

Now here are some Aussie fan Questions:

@ohsnapitsamba asked: If you could be a character out of any Disney show or movie (including animated movies) for a day, who would you be and why?

T: Ursula! She’s the QUEEN!

Wendy Badke asked:  Why so fabulous?

T: I got it from my mom.

@lovatics_army asked: How/where do you see yourself in next 5 years from now? How long do you think you will pursue your YouTube career?

T: I’ll be a YouTuber for as long as I love it… and I haven’t stopped loving it, even after 6 years. In five years, I hope to be taking over the world. It’s completely plausible.

M: You’re one of the biggest things online at the moment!  What does feel it like having so many fans?

T: It feels like an amazing opportunity to positively impact the world. That’s what I hope to do. Also to have an amazingly fun and crazy life to take my people along on the ride.

M: You’ve got loads of Aussie fans, are you planning on coming to Australia any time soon?

T: I would DIE TO! Soon. Stay tuned!

note:  He did come to Sydney earlier this year! 😀

Wasn’t that just a fabulous interview Team Fangirl?  If you want to know more about Tyler, watch his videos or just past the time, go follow him on Twitter and Instagram at @tyleroakley and make sure you subscribe to his YouTube channels by looking up Tyler Oakley and extratyler!
