’16 Going On ’17

200Dear 2016,

The time has come to say goodbye and with that may you take away any negative energy left with you.  Thank you for allowing me to meet some of the most beautiful people inside and out I have ever known – the circle of people I was surrounded by this year was just so good and I hope it continues that way. To those that left, whether you come back or not is entirely up to you – I am grateful for the times we shared and will never forget our moments together.   Thank you for providing me a year of firsts and memorable ones they were. You’ve been a rollercoaster and I don’t think I have ever been filled with so many different emotions in a short space of time… I experienced full on joyful laughter whilst crying hysterically. Curse the insomnia and the anxious nights but that all shaped the outcome of today and though at the time I did not remember, I feel safe knowing I will never be thrown a challenge too big for me to overcome. I am grateful for the lesson/s that there are no guarantees and understanding that nothing should be forced, not even the force that should always be with you ūüėČ Thank you for the blessings and opportunities you graced upon my family, friends and I. ūüôā

200-1

Dear 2017,

Welcome! As usual we will continue to dream big and I am so excited for what is in store for everyone. I hope more and more people come to the realisation that Black Lives Matter and that this is a year forward for feminism – and no I do not mean the feminazi but for feminists.  I also hope that Asian and other ethnic actors are given more opportunities to be the leading lady/man. The reality is that you may not be a whole lot greater than last year, but it is in the hope that you could be that makes it great.  I hope we as a collective learn that only love will drive out hate, and that means a lot more than adding a hashtag in front of a trend, it is in times like today that actions are what are needed and even if we are far away from the trouble and burdens in our world that we do what we are able to. Like always, there will be personal obstacles – hopefully not too harsh but even so we’ll just embrace it. Ready or not, let’s make this year a memorable one. I’m sure the best is yet to come.

365 new days means 365 new chances. Don’t waste a single one. I wish you and your family a safe and happy year filled with good things! My choice of poison is champagne… Whatever yours may be, celebrate responsibly x ūüôā

With love and light always, M ‚̧

18 Important Things I’ve Learnt Before 18

I’d like to think I’ve been taught some really useful life lessons on this journey so far and before I become a legal adult (18 damnnn), I’d like to share with you 18 of my favourites.

  1. It’s all about priorities… Prioritising wisely is probably one of the best pieces of advices I could give someone right now.¬†
  2. Friends will come and go and that’s okay, sometimes it’s better off that way.
  3. It’s not about who you’ve known the longest but about who’s entered your life and shown that they’re with you through it all.¬†Sometimes you just click. If they’re the real deal, they will be more beneficial than someone you’ve known pretty much your whole life.¬†
  4. You may think it seems petty, but pay attention to the little things people do/don’t do – it usually provides an¬†indication of¬†what they’re really like and how they’ll be when it comes to more significant things. Maybe it’s just me but I love the little things and am one to pay close attention to detail.
  5. If you can meet a real good group of people from school/uni/work, you are so very fortunate. I have my best friends from high school, a few good high school friends and I have found a wonderful group of people I can gladly call my friends. I never did have heaps of friends and there was a time when I only had like 2 friends and like any young girl would feel, it made me really sad, which made my mother really sad. It is easy to have acquaintances and people you like to talk to who also enjoy talking to you. It is when you find people who get you, the ones you are totally yourself with, the people you are not trying to impress with anything more but the person you are and they love you for that. It’s the people who will stick by you through your best and worst times, who will listen to whatever you have to say, may put you in your place but respect you above all. I have found myself in a wonderful position in terms of friends and can surely say I without them I would not survive and be the person I am today.
  6. Only with the heart one can see rightly, but be sure to find the balance with your head. You must follow your heart but darling please use logic too and think things through.
  7. People aren’t gonna love the same way you do.¬†They say it is a blessing and a curse to feel everything so deeply and I for one can confirm that. We’re all different in the way we handle emotions, that’s normal, how boring would it be if we all felt the same and understood each other at first sight, pfft an easy life was never promised.¬†
  8. Health is wealth. This cannot be stressed enough!!! On that note, try your best not to stress – your overall wellbeing is of upmost importance.
  9. Knowledge is power, but grades aren’t everything. I was always a high achiever in school and taught to really value education. For a long time I was so invested in ensuring I got top grades and achieving well academically I would forget more important things.
  10. Say yes to every opportunity but also know when to say no.
  11. No longer compare yourself to others.¬†This is so crucial for your happiness and self-esteem and worth. As a competitive person I could not help but see myself in comparison with someone who was or appeared in a ‘better’ position than me. ¬†It didn’t help that people around me would compare me to others whenever I made a slight error.
  12. Anything that is too much is never good. Ever.
  13. Do your very best in everything you do. If you’re going to half-ass something, don’t waste your time. Nothing great has ever come from anyone doing a half-assed job. If you really want it, you should be willing to do whatever it takes. If you are not in the position you hoped to be in, at least you can look back with no regrets and can say that you did your very best.
  14. Watch good films, listen to great music, read wonderful stories, drink the best coffees/teas, eat amazing food. Note: Spectacular activities either alone or with quality company. Life is too short to watch bad movies, listen to music other people tell you to – unless their recommendations are your jams and read books you have no interest in. ¬†Don’t settle for that mediocre instant coffee or tea that is no good. The same goes for alcoholic beverages, I understand living on a uni budget and all but buy that fancy cocktail and drink nice wine if you can. Do things that enhance your being and not just because you don’t want to be like everyone else or on the flip side just to be different.
  15. Karma – in its own time.¬†This one is awesome! What goes around will come around. You know what sucks? How nasty some people can be and yet they appear so pleasant – the wolf in sheep clothing. They will get a taste of their medicine… Just give it time. The same goes for really good people, firstly keep up the great work because people like you are making everyday life better for someone.
  16. Believe. In anything and everything and most especially in yourself.
  17. You are enough. You were always enough and will always be enough and don’t let anyone tell¬†you otherwise.
  18. It is a gift to wake up every single day Рmake it count. You get one shot at this life, live everyday to the fullest.

With love and light always, Mon ‚̧

A Rising Star Of Our Own

Aussie Star in the making Chelsea Glaw

Now living in Los Angeles, Gold Coast grown girl, Chelsea Glaw is making her mark in the world of film.

Having a strong passion for dramatic arts, in particular, acting for screen since a young girl, Chelsea continuously worked on improving herself as an actress.  In Year 11 (2012), she was successful at claiming a scholarship at the prestigious New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. At the opportunity, 4 weeks after her high school graduation, a young girl left her family and friends in pursuit of a big dream in the Big Apple.

Filming her American reel

Chelsea lived in New York, New York for two years whilst undertaking her Associates Degree in Acting which she completed last year. While studying she surrounded herself with means to better herself as a performer including learning outside of a school environment, she networked, went to live shows, filmed short films, attended multiple auditions and was an assistant at a acting and modelling agency in the city in 2015.

She also attended her first red carpet event in New York City last September where her close friend Alexander Flores stars in the movie Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials as Winston.

Red Carpet Lovin’

Chelsea commented,¬†“It was a very overwhelming experience being on the red carpet and having cameras flash in your face every 2 seconds in every single direction. I had never been on a red carpet before so I was just posing for photos and then I got out of there. But I was so happy to be there supporting Alex and he handled it like a pro, as always. Dazzling the fans and doing interview after interview. It was great. Oh and I should probably say the movie was great too!”

She was also lucky enough to attend The Scorch Trials after party where she spoke with¬†the awesome cast, including leading lads Dylan O’Brien and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Although Chels has recently moved to Los Angeles where her dreams continue to be more of a reality, New York will always hold a special place in her heart. Chelsea¬†said that it had shaped the person she is today; she learned so much from the city and made lifelong connections and the best friends she will ever have. Does she miss home? She misses her family big time, vegemite toast, and although she’s met a great bunch of Aussie performers in LA; she still misses being surrounded by the Aussie accent.

In her element: in front of the camera

Talk about timing – she’s hit the sweet spot at the moment for film as La La Land enters pilot season (peak time for casting, producing or preparation of TV pilot episodes). She’s been keeping busy with her application for an artist visa, auditions left, right and center, networking, and acting for short films. Chelsea’s upcoming projects includes a¬†short film about her story ¬†written by filmmaker and photographer Steven Leone who has just wrapped up shooting a range of models in Europe. ¬†The short film will star her and begins filming very soon. This 19 year old¬†isn’t slowing down anytime soon. ¬†Watch this space and remember her name, this girl is going places!

What makes you happy?

“FOOD! Hahahaha!” ūüėÄ “Food, fashion and music.”

Happiness is…

“Being healthy and being around great people.”

“Being around people that you love – it doesn’t matter where you are as long as you’re around people that you love, you’ll be happy always.”

A Walk in a Winter Wonderland

*We live in the sunshine state in the Southern Hemisphere thus faux snow ‚ĚĄÔłŹ‚ĚĄÔłŹ‚ĚĄÔłŹ

On December 10, Warner Bros. Movie World held their annual White Christmas Community Charity Night, that launched the beginning of White Christmas 2015, and I was fortunate enough to attend and bring along some company (ty Marina Mirage).

Elf tip: Leave home early to arrive early, the traffic struggle is real!

It happened to be storming on our way there which was a little worrying but Mother Nature cleared the sky not too long after we arrived, just before 6pm.

O Christmas Tree

The gorgeous and ginormous Christmas tree greeted us as we entered the park – not even the rain could dull its light. ¬†Colourful themed foil balloons and light sabers being sold on carts, the ‘snow’ falling gently all around and excited children and adults alike getting into the Christmas spirit. The entire Gold Coast SUNS Team also participate in the event; White Christmas being the the biggest community event of the year for them. ¬†The event allows thousands of the disadvantaged on the Gold Coast and their families to enjoy free entry to Movie World for the night, a free meal, the chance to get autographs and take photos with the SUNS players. ¬†I’m so glad I was able to go to this year’s Charity Night as you see how Movie World and their partners really give back to the local community; to those who need it most.

When the mascot has hair fetish?!

Okay, so maybe the regular White Christmas nights aren’t the same as the Charity night but there are still loads of the same cool things happening and mounds more to offer:

There’s heaps to see, such as the snow (don’t eat it, we’re not that advance just yet), the dazzling display of more than one million lights at 7pm, and the special themed parade at 8pm where all the Looney Tunes Charcters, The Gingerbread Man, Frosty, Santa’s little helpers and the big fella himself come out to play on spectacular Christmas floats and sing and dance to Christmas carols.

Elf tip: Grab a good spot for the parade, Santa’s helpers hand out sweet treats!

There are also heaps of magical things to do too which are included in your ticket: like visit the fairies in the fairy garden, take an Elfie, take awkward family photos with full on matching beanies, scarves and Christmas shirts – capturing the awkward is easier than expected, take pics with Santa and if you’re lucky, the Looney Tunes in their Christmas wear, and of course experience the best rides Movie World has to offer like the Superman Escape, Batwing Spaceshot, Scooby Coaster and the rides in WB Kids (weather permitting)! ¬†For an extra $28 for adults and just $13 for kids, you can also enjoy a delicious Christmas feast at Rick’s Cafe for event nights before Christmas Day, which include a traditional roast and Christmas pudding. ¬†You can also decorate a yummy gingerbread man for $6 – best part is you get to eat it and don’t have to clean up your mess! There’s also the Elf Club and the North Pole Pass that you can book! ūüėÄ

Elf tip: Go watch the Ice Age Christmas 4D adventure in the Roxy theatre – definitely one of the best 4D experiences.

Know Your Worth

Loving me, loving me. Loving you, loving you.

We all know what it feels like to have been treated like crap, to have been used and abused by work/school mates, friends and/or lovers. It sucks.  Confidence and self-esteem are key qualities in both personal and professional development yet seem out of reach with society driving us to embrace unrealistic expectations and the lack of respect shown for one another.  How we see ourselves is not only derived from our own beliefs but is also influenced by those around us. Self love is not something gained instantly, it is an ongoing lesson obtained with the right attitude and an open mind.

It is so important to surround yourself with good, positive people. ¬†Invest your time with people who are going to lift you higher while staying grounded. ¬†Invest your time with people who make you a better person but still accept and love you for who you are. Invest your time in people who support you no matter, the ones who are there for you at¬†your best and at your worst.¬†Invest¬†your time wisely and with the best people because you only have one shot at each day. ūüôā ¬†Remember that not everyone is going to stick around forever but appreciate those who bring good energy and treat you like custom couture and not just off the generic sale rack. ¬†There will always be people trying to rain on your parade but don’t let them dull your sparkle.

Darling, love yourself. ‚̧ Much easier said than done but you’re the only one who can make that choice. ¬†Look in the mirror and say how dashing or sexy you look. Tell yourself that you love the way your eyes sparkle in the light or the cute way your nose wrinkles when you laugh. We¬†have flaws and are the worst critics of ourselves, but embrace who you are and no one can use your flaws against you. #flawesome

Know that the¬†number of likes, comments, friends or followers you have does not say anything about your character. ¬†We are priceless and should not fear abandonment by another. Don’t settle for less than the best. ¬†We should not be someone’s back up plan or second option. ¬†Know that you are precious and loved. ¬†Take the time to discover and treat yourself – binge watch Netflix, buy those new kicks or lay in bed for as long as you want, find something you love and do it as often as possible. Know your worth because what you allow is what will continue.

With love and light always, Monique x

ITALIAN

Situated in a classic heritage building, Jamie’s Italian Brisbane is a marvellous split-level restaurant and bar. Although recommended to make reservations, walk-ins are more than welcome if tables are available. ¬†On this occasion we went for lunch on a Monday and yes there was a queue. ¬†As Terry Durack from Table Talk said a few years ago, Jamie’s Italian, regardless of the city it is located and the great or poor reviews it receives; it will continue to do well, because of the Jamie effect. ¬†The food was absolutely wonderful and the service was paralleled. ¬†We had a very lovely waitress, quite calm and cheerful, and it appears that all the staff knows the menu to a tee, they also explained the specials and could recommend suitable dishes. ¬†But before you wrap your fork around your Al Forno or dive into your Fish in a Bag, try one of Jamie’s creative cocktails or a non-boozy refresher ($6.45): lemon, elderflower cordial, cranberry juice & lemonade. I hear the Espresso Martini, Pappa “G” and Jamie’s Grown-Up Iced Tea are just a few of the alcoholic hits.

Italian Nachos
Italian Nachos

We started with the Italian Nachos ($11.25) this time, deep fried, four-cheese filled ravioli served with arrabiata sauce, which were nice, innovative and fun but not amazing.  The Famous Polenta Chips ($9) however, are sensational.

Porcini Fettucini
Porcini Fettucini

Both in main sizes, I ordered the Porcini Fettuccine ($14.5/24.5): a superb combination of fresh mushrooms, garlic, lemon gremolata, Parmesan and herby breadcrumbs and my friend had the Rigatoni Carbonara ($15/25): Crispy pancetta, buttery leeks and a traditional carbonara sauce. ¬†To end our lunch, we savoured every bite of the Creamy Panna Cotta ($8.5), topped with seasonal fruit compote, the crunch of the fruit complimenting the delicate melt-in-your-mouth vanilla goodness. ¬†You don’t feel rushed to finish your meal which makes the experience that much better. ¬†

Jamie’s Italian is suitable for just about everyone, with a wide range of¬†vegetarian options and for every occasion: date nights, a drink and a snack with the mates, a family lunch; there’s an adorable and healthy kids menu. You can find the entire menu here.¬†Overall, although Jamie’s menu consists of Italian food that is both genuine and not so much, the splendid taste of the food accompanied by great service and a cool ambience with that Jamie charm is more than enough to keep me returning. ¬†Have you been to Jamie’s Italian? ¬†What are the best Italian restaurants you’ve been to?

Morgan’s Happy

20150922-144921.jpgMorgan, 17

What does happiness/being happy mean to you?

It means having enjoyment in life and the feeling from being around good people ad enjoying life to its full potential.

What makes you happy?

My friends, my family. YOLO. When I do really well in something. Achievements.

When you or others are down, how do you pick them back up?

For me, I play my flute or any other type of music. I make other people happy by just being my funny human self and use my humour.

Rose Is Choosing Happiness

Rose, 16P1180389

What does happiness/being happy mean to you?

That is deep! Happiness means to me, doing the things you love and being with the people you love and being content in life with what you have.

What makes you happy?

My family makes me happy ’cause my life revolves around them, my friends make me happy. Just a simple life but good things in life, yeah. This just came straight at me. Family and friends make me happy.

If your friends and family are sad, how do you cheer them up?

A good talk with them or even a hug! Just a hug, that simple – because sometimes people don’t want to talk to you when they’re sad so you just give them a hug and I guess sometimes that means the world to people or just showing that you’re there for them… yeah.

Are you happy now?

Yeahhh! I’m happy ’cause I’m with Monique ūüėČ and we’re chilling here, it’s pretty fun. So yeah, I’m very happy, thank you. ‚̧
